Surfaces:

The goal of this project was to turn a piece of mint-green prototyping foam into an abstract silver shape with no visible imperfections to the finish and surface. In this project there are no shortcuts. Only hours of careful and meticulous work, focusing on discipline and craftsmanship with each layer. Little did I know that to get the shape to be perfect, I would spend fifty-five hours on something less than the size of a coffee cup. And trust me. I counted each and every one of the hours.

Fall 2023

This project started in my sketchbook like all my others do. I began by drawing out shapes greatly inspired by the rise, fall, and flow of the mountains and nature. After selecting a design, I used hand files to slowly shave away at the foam, and finished by sanding it with multiple grades of sandpaper. Following the carving and shaping process, I proceeded to mix and cover the foam in a clear resin in order to create a smooth surface to prepare for priming. While at this point I believed that the process was going well, after drying , the resin had a drop in it that did not level off, leaving me to halt the process and carefully file that one section down to not impact the rest of the surface. After layers of priming and sanding to fix any small imperfections, I  painted it with automotive metallic silver paint, sealed it with two layers of clear coat, and polished it. What remains is a shiny, smooth, abstract silver shape, fitted with an anchor that can screw into the wall for display.
