Cross Branding #2: Replicating AI GENERATED GLASSES
SPring 2024
Once seen as a technology of the future, Artificial Intelligence has now firmly entered the modern world. With platforms like ChatGPT, AI is more accessible and widely used than ever before.
AI can already produce text, complete homework assignments, generate recipes, and more. It’s easy to envision that AI driven platforms might soon enough be smart enough to take over in the art and design industries . But can an AI-generated content truly be curated precisely enough from a prompt to replace human work?
In this project, I was tasked with prompting an AI image generator to create a pair of cross-branded eyewear inspired by the Willys MB. After obtaining an image from the generator, I set out to replicate it as closely as possible. This involved creating a 3D model of the glasses in Fusion and refining the overall image with Photoshop.
AI IMAge Generation
Using an AI image generator, I prompted it to design cross-branded pairs of glasses. The results varied, with many outputs resembling illustrated drawings rather than realistic renderings.
After selecting one option (center image), I began designing the glasses in Fusion, aiming to replicate the AI-generated concept as closely as possible while making interpretive tweaks to clarify the design and to refocus the design back to the identity of the vehicle.
Since the AI output was only in perspective view, it was essential to create isometric drawings to accurately capture the shapes and proportions of each component.
Once the design was complete, I produced line drawings and the copy Photoshop composition to present the final concept.
Example Prompt:
“Design a pair of sunglasses that captures the sturdy essence of the vintage Willys MB Jeep. The eyewear ought to offer an adaptable fit and lenses which can be swapped to accommodate diverse conditions, such as indoor and outdoor scenarios, different lighting, and weather variations. The design should provide enough space for a helmet to be comfortably worn and bestow substantial protection against harmful sun rays, while also facilitating the usage of weapon sights, perhaps implying inbuilt sights in the lenses. The sunglasses should manifest extreme durability, boasting scratchproof lenses and robust frames capable of withstanding strenuous activities and severe conditions. The design should embody a timeless form and style, easily recognizable for its inspiration and purpose. Following the practical characteristics, one lens should incorporate a magnifier.”
